How to Talk with Your Child About Substance Use

Starting the conversation early helps build trust and resilience. Keep these tips in mind:

  • Begin conversations before problems start, talk about health, goals, and choices.
  • Listen more than you speak, and encourage your child to share openly.
  • Be clear about your values and expectations.
  • Don’t worry about having all the answers, honesty and openness go a long way.

Recognizing Early Signs of Substance Misuse

As a parent, you know your child best. Therefore, if you notice changes that feel unusual, it may be time to start a deeper conversation. Some common warning signs include:

  • Sudden changes in mood, behavior, or grades
  • Loss of interest in hobbies or friendships
  • Secretive or withdrawn behavior
  • Physical changes like red eyes, rapid weight change, or neglect of hygiene
  • Missing money or valuables from home

Below are trusted resources to help you better detect, understand, and respond to your child’s mental health needs.

Recognizing the Signs

  • Sudden changes in mood, sleep, or appetite.
  • Withdrawal from friends, family, or activities they used to enjoy.
  • Difficulty concentrating or declining grades.
  • Frequent headaches, stomachaches, or unexplained physical complaints.
  • Talking about hopelessness, worthlessness, or self-harm.
